Moving to Oregon!

It’s with some sadness and much excitement that I have taken a new position as VP of Engineering with G5 Search Marketing. The company is located in Bend, OR.

Tomorrow is the first day of my last week in the office at AT&T Interactive (ATTi).

It was a tough decision to leave behind the teams that I have built up at ATTi over the last two and a half years, but living in Oregon has long been on of my goals. My step-daughter and grand sons will be four hours away, and I believe it will be easier to get my kids and extended family up to Oregon (our vacation stomping ground, growing up) than it was to get them down to SoCal.

Aaron Patterson will be taking over the ruby community relationship role that I was filling at ATTi.

Alf Mikula and JR Fent will continue to run the LA Ruby Meetup, and JR and I are going to continue to run the Los Angeles Ruby Conference.

My work with Confreaks will continue and we’re looking forward to recording and publishing the International Ruby Conference X in New Orleans.

G5 is a ruby shop and over time we will be building up the engineering team.

I’ve had a great time in Los Angeles and look forward to the new challenges in Bend.

LA Ruby Meetup

Ruby in Los Angeles

This is our 28th la ruby meetup, starting in May of 2008. We’ve only missed one month. 28 meetings… That’s great, but in addition to the regular monthly meetup a we’ve also ended up hosting various code jams, hackfests, and lunches. In addition Evan Phoenix and Shane Becker have recently established Nerd Club Los Angeles that meets every Tuesday night from 7PM to 10PM at Blank Spaces on Wilshire Blvd near La Brea.

So the expansion of the Ruby community here in LA has been awesome over the last two and a half years.

All of the LA Ruby Conf 2009 Videos are now available online.

It has taken a while to actually get to processing them, but it didn’t take long once I was able to focus on it and get them done (this past weekend).

At the last LA Ruby group meetup we discussed a logo possibility for LA Ruby, although tossed out in jest, I decided to play with the idea anyway. Here my first attempt at the concept. I am just shifting from Paint Shop Pro X under windows to Adobe Photoshop on the mack, so my skills are rough, but here it is anyway

LARuby meeting #2

Last night we hosted the second LARuby meetup at the YELLOWPAGES.COM office. We had a great turn out.

We spent a good deal of time on introductions and then the following presentations:

Jacob Dunphy presented on git and github
Giles Bowkett presented on Archaeopteryx his Midi Generator

Followed by about 30 minutes of hanging out with some good discussions, then we moved the entire event down the street to the Americana were JR Fent our recruiter at

LARuby – Inaugural Meeting – June 19th, 2008

The inaugural meeting for LARuby was held last night at the LA Times building down town.

We had a really good turn out… failed to actually count, guestimate 25+, a large contingency from LA Times, a large contingency from YELLOWPAGES.COM, and a decent number of people with other affiliations.

It was a good meet and greet.

Next month July 17th, 7:00 PM will be the second meeting hosted by YELLOWPAGES.COM in Glendale.
