Lone Star Ruby Conference 2008

I spent the last two day’s in Austin, Texas at the Lone Star Ruby Conference. It was a really great event, was able to meet “Matz” again, and have a short conversation about the future of ruby. The humbleness of this man never ceases to amaze me.

YELLOWPAGES.COM and PeepCode sponsored the video recording of the conference. In conjunction with Mopac Media and Confreaks, LLC we were able to record all of the presentations from Friday and Saturday. Greg Pollack and Jason Seifer from RailsEnvy are doing their “conference in xx minutes”, we are hoping to release the videos on either Thursday September 10th, or on the following Monday September 15th.

Recognition should definitely be given to Jim Freeze and the rest of the Lone Star Ruby Foundation for putting together a great conference, that was preceded by a great day of tutorials.

For those of you who didn’t make be sure to follow ‘confreaks’ on twitter for the latest updates on the video availability.

yafinr – Yet Another Forum (in Ruby)

After installing and supporting YAF.NET (http://www.yetanotherforum.net) for a couple of clients, I have decided to build another YAF, but I’ll do it in Ruby. The trips back into the land of ASP.NET and C# have been painful to say the least.

So tonight I started hacking… haven’t done much of that in a while, too busy wrapping my head around the trappings of managing an increasing team of developers at YELLOWPAGES.COM. So I got the latest rails, created a respository on my dreamhost account for SVN, and then realized… wait… why SVN? Why not git?

I have an account on github, so in an effort not to fall too far behind I went to install git:

port install git-core

-bash: port: command not found

Ah yes… this is not my personal Mac, it is my YPC Mac, MacPorts has not yet been installed. So I went out and got 1.60 of MacPorts… installed nice and easy, and started the git install. Well I forgot the amount of time required to install git on a pretty clean Mac. It’s still fetching bits and pieces, building ncurses as I type.

So tomorrow night I’ll actually through a basic site up on yafinr.randquist.us, and go from there.

My initial thoughts are to reverse engineer the functionality of yaf.net. I like the product, just don’t like moding it.

On another note I fired off quotations (some late) to RubyNation, “Voices that Matter: Professional Ruby Conference”, and the WindyCity Rails Conf.

Well it is official… I join the YELLOWPAGES.COM team as a dev manager starting next Monday – huge domain to wrap my mind around looking forward to it!

After the first three days on the job I have to head to NYC to record Goruco 2008 as part of Confreaks.

Hope to see some of you there.

I posted this badge a few days before I accepted a Job offer at YELLOWPAGES.COM which ultimately lead to me being in SLC packing to move to LA instead of attending RailsConf 2008, but I’ll be there next year.
